Good question! Are you grading audience members?

Leonsergent communications - Prise de parole en public/Public Speaking

If there is a persisting habit which has truly little value, it is that of grading the question before answering it during a presentation in front of an audience. Imagine for a moment that you are in the audience and your neighbour's question has been given the grade "Good question! " and that yours received no such appreciation, although your question was, in your opinion, as relevant as any other. Think also of all the questions from the audience that consistently receive the exact same grade.

Good question is an awkward flattery too often overheard that offers little value and is strategically unsound. Why? For three reasons. For starters, If every question asked receives the same rating systematically (Good question), either this is rightly deserved, and at the same time not very credible, or the rating has no value, these words now empty of meaning and intention. Secondly, your listeners may feel that you have taken on the roles of judge and jury member, which could possibly create a distance between you and those who have graciously offered you the privilege of listening to you. Finally, those who have chosen to ask questions may feel slighted or marginalized by your comments.

There is no need to grade the question. Remind yourself that all questions are good, even if, at first glance, you might think that some are more captivating than others. In the mind of the person who asked the question, asking a question required thought and required a certain amount of courage. Thank the person for asking their question, restate the question in your words so that all listeners understand the question, and answer briefly.
